Sunflower Seed Market Size in SADC
The SADC sunflower seed market expanded sharply to $X in 2022, rising by 8% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.
Sunflower Seed Production in SADC
In value terms, sunflower seed production expanded sharply to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a slight downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Tanzania (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Zambia (X tons), together accounting for 96% of total production.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Zambia (with a CAGR of +12.3%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average sunflower seed yield amounted to X tons per ha in 2022, with an increase of 3.3% compared with 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the yield increased by 14% against the previous year. The level of yield peaked at X tons per ha in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The sunflower seed harvested area reduced modestly to X ha in 2022, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 18%. As a result, the harvested area attained the peak level of X ha. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the sunflower seed harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC
In 2022, overseas shipments of sunflower seed increased by 58% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after four years of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 90% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sunflower seed exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a noticeable decrease. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Botswana was the main exporter of sunflower seed in SADC, with the volume of exports amounting to X tons, which was near 46% of total exports in 2022. Swaziland (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Tanzania (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Malawi (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 52% share of total exports. Mozambique (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to sunflower seed exports from Botswana stood at -4.2%. At the same time, Mozambique (+28.3%), Swaziland (+16.8%), South Africa (+4.8%) and Tanzania (+2.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +28.3% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malawi (-22.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Swaziland (+16 p.p.), Tanzania (+8.8 p.p.), South Africa (+7.4 p.p.), Botswana (+6.6 p.p.) and Mozambique (+1.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Malawi (-40.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, the largest sunflower seed supplying countries in SADC were South Africa ($X), Botswana ($X) and Swaziland ($X), together comprising 93% of total exports. Tanzania, Malawi and Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 6.8%.
Mozambique, with a CAGR of +28.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -4.8% against the previous year. Export price indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, sunflower seed export price increased by +12.0% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 56% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (-0.2%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Sunflower Seed Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2022, overseas purchases of sunflower seed increased by 114% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 264% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, sunflower seed imports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 222%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 75% of total imports in 2022. Tanzania (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Zimbabwe (X tons) and Botswana (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 21% share of total imports. Namibia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -4.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+46.2%), Tanzania (+30.1%), Botswana (+28.2%) and Namibia (+8.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +46.2% from 2012-2022. While the share of Tanzania (+7.8 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+6.3 p.p.) and Botswana (+5.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-20.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest sunflower seed importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Zimbabwe ($X) and Tanzania ($X), with a combined 92% share of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Zimbabwe, with a CAGR of +67.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, surging by 7.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw tangible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 224%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
