After two years of growth, overseas shipments of sweet biscuits, waffles and wafers decreased by -1.1% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a noticeable decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 6.1% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, sweet biscuit, waffle and wafer exports expanded notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a mild reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 19%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the key exporter of sweet biscuits, waffles and wafers in SADC, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was approx. 69% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Zimbabwe (X tons), Lesotho (X tons) and Zambia (X tons), together making up a 28% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -5.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+25.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +25.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Lesotho (-5.0%) and Zambia (-5.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Zimbabwe increased by +16 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest sweet biscuit, waffle and wafer supplier in SADC, comprising 81% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zimbabwe ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 3.6% share.

In South Africa, sweet biscuit, waffle and wafer exports plunged by an average annual rate of -1.3% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Zimbabwe (+24.2% per year) and Zambia (-8.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, jumping by 16% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.8%. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the export price increased by 19% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Lesotho ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+4.4%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports of Sweet Biscuits, Waffles and Wafers

Imports in SADC

In 2021, the amount of sweet biscuits, waffles and wafers imported in SADC expanded notably to X tons, growing by 8.9% on 2020 figures. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -20.1% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 54% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, sweet biscuit, waffle and wafer imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when imports increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Angola (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) represented the largest importer of sweet biscuits, waffles and wafers in SADC, achieving 63% of total import. Tanzania (X tons) took a 7.7% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Namibia (5.2%) and Botswana (5.1%). Mauritius (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of +11.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Angola ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 56% of total imports. Mauritius, Botswana, Tanzania and Namibia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 26%.

Tanzania, with a CAGR of +14.6%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 3.2% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+4.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
