Preserved Sweet Corn Market Size in SADC
The SADC preserved sweet corn market declined to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -3.3% against the previous year. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Preserved Sweet Corn Production in SADC
In value terms, preserved sweet corn production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 27% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
South Africa (X tons) remains the largest preserved sweet corn producing country in SADC, accounting for 92% of total volume. Moreover, preserved sweet corn production in South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Zimbabwe (X tons), more than tenfold.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in South Africa amounted to +2.1%.
Preserved Sweet Corn Exports
Exports in SADC
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in overseas shipments of sweet corn prepared or preserved, when their volume decreased by -12.4% to X tons. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 116%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, preserved sweet corn exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a temperate expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 110%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from South Africa (X tons), together recording 98% of total export.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the sweet corn prepared or preserved exports, with a CAGR of +9.8% from 2012 to 2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa increased by +26 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest preserved sweet corn supplier in SADC.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at +6.4%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -4.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price showed a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the export price increased by 11% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.
From 2012 to 2022, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to -3.1% per year.
Preserved Sweet Corn Imports
Imports in SADC
Preserved sweet corn imports contracted to X tons in 2022, dropping by -3% on the previous year's figure. In general, imports saw a pronounced slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 39%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, preserved sweet corn imports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 38%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Mauritius represented the largest importer of sweet corn prepared or preserved in SADC, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was approx. 38% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Angola (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Namibia (X tons), together achieving a 46% share of total imports. The following importers - South Africa (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) - together made up 7.3% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of +16.4%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Mauritius ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported sweet corn prepared or preserved in SADC, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Madagascar, with a 12% share.
In Mauritius, preserved sweet corn imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (-6.3% per year) and Madagascar (+10.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2.9% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a slight decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 3.7% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+1.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
