In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the SADC organic pigments market, when its value increased by 11% to $X. Overall, consumption, however, continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, organic pigments production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 78%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, after three years of decline, there was significant growth in shipments abroad of synthetic organic coloring matter and pigments, when their volume increased by 43% to X tons. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, organic pigments exports contracted modestly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 8.2%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Mauritius (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) - each amounted to a 5.1% share of total exports.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the synthetic organic coloring matter and pigments exports, with a CAGR of +4.9% from 2012 to 2021. Swaziland (-2.2%) and Mauritius (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+8.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Swaziland and Mauritius saw its share reduced by -1.8% and -3.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest organic pigments supplier in SADC, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Swaziland ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.
In South Africa, organic pigments exports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Swaziland (-0.1% per year) and Mauritius (-0.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -31.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a pronounced decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 23% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced sharply in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+5.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
After two years of decline, supplies from abroad of synthetic organic coloring matter and pigments increased by 22% to X tons in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the key importer of synthetic organic coloring matter and pigments, achieving 56% of total imports. Tanzania (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 16% share, followed by Mauritius (7.4%) and Angola (6.3%). Mozambique (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -1.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zambia (+10.1%), Mauritius (+7.8%), Mozambique (+3.4%), Zimbabwe (+2.4%) and Tanzania (+2.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +10.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Angola (-9.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+3.9 p.p.), Mauritius (+3.8 p.p.) and Zambia (+1.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-3 p.p.) and Angola (-8.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported synthetic organic coloring matter and pigments in SADC, comprising 65% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 7.2% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+3.4% per year) and Mauritius (+3.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, growing by 1.7% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.6%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 13%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
