In value terms, fluorescent brightening agents exports reduced to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a remarkable increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +52.4% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 73% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Madagascar (X tons) was the largest exporter of synthetic organic products used as fluorescent brightening agents, committing 79% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), mixing up a 15% share of total exports. The following exporters - Zambia (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) - together made up 5% of total exports.

Madagascar was also the fastest-growing in terms of the synthetic organic products used as fluorescent brightening agents exports, with a CAGR of +95.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Africa (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Swaziland (-4.6%) and Zambia (-17.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Madagascar (+79 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Swaziland (-6.1 p.p.), South Africa (-13 p.p.) and Zambia (-59.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Madagascar ($X), South Africa ($X) and Swaziland ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 95% share of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Madagascar, with a CAGR of +68.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, growing by 4.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a pronounced reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+11.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, imports of synthetic organic products used as fluorescent brightening agents in SADC fell sharply to X tons, dropping by -29.7% against the previous year. Overall, imports continue to indicate a perceptible decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 9.7% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, fluorescent brightening agents imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +19.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 90% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), comprising a 5.7% share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -3.1% from 2012 to 2022. Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Tanzania (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -1.5% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported synthetic organic products used as fluorescent brightening agents in SADC, comprising 89% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 5.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled +3.6%.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 59% against the previous year. Import price indicated a prominent increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while South Africa amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+7.4%).
