Exports in SADC

For the sixth year in a row, SADC recorded growth in overseas shipments of synthetic organic tanning substances, which increased by 18% to X tons in 2021. In general, exports saw resilient growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 110%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, synthetic organic tanning substances exports expanded rapidly to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a resilient increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +40.0% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 38%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Mozambique prevails in exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was near 87% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Botswana (X tons), making up a 9.2% share of total exports. South Africa (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Mozambique was also the fastest-growing in terms of the synthetic organic tanning substances exports, with a CAGR of +31.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, South Africa (+8.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Botswana (-6.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Mozambique increased by +65 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest synthetic organic tanning substances supplying countries in SADC were Botswana ($X), Mozambique ($X) and South Africa ($X), together accounting for 100% of total exports.

Among the main exporting countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +34.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, falling by -2.8% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a pronounced contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 an increase of 44% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+12.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports of Synthetic Organic Tanning Substances

Imports in SADC

In 2021, purchases abroad of synthetic organic tanning substances was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Overall, imports posted strong growth. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, synthetic organic tanning substances imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a resilient expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -5.7% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 37% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the key importer of synthetic organic tanning substances, mixing up 66% of total imports. Angola (X tons) took a 22% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Swaziland (5.4%). Namibia (X tons) held a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to synthetic organic tanning substances imports into South Africa stood at +4.6%. At the same time, Angola (+63.1%), Swaziland (+13.6%) and Namibia (+7.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Angola emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +63.1% from 2012-2021. Angola (+21 p.p.) and Swaziland (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -19.1% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported synthetic organic tanning substances in SADC, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 9.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Swaziland, with a 6.1% share.

In South Africa, synthetic organic tanning substances imports expanded at an average annual rate of +5.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Angola (+49.7% per year) and Swaziland (+10.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, declining by -12.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 35% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
