In 2022, shipments abroad of t-shirts increased by 22% to X units, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, exports showed buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 221% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, t-shirt exports reduced to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 15% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
Mauritius represented the key exporting country with an export of around X units, which finished at 77% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Madagascar (X units), comprising an 11% share of total exports. The following exporters - Swaziland (X units), Lesotho (X units), South Africa (X units) and Tanzania (X units) - together made up 11% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to t-shirt exports from Mauritius stood at +9.7%. At the same time, Swaziland (+36.0%), Madagascar (+22.9%), Tanzania (+13.2%) and Lesotho (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +36.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-1.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Madagascar (+7.4 p.p.) and Swaziland (+3.2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Lesotho and South Africa saw its share reduced by -3% and -5.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Mauritius ($X) remains the largest t-shirt supplier in SADC, comprising 39% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Madagascar ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by Lesotho, with a 14% share.
In Mauritius, t-shirt exports declined by an average annual rate of -11.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Madagascar (+10.7% per year) and Lesotho (-1.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, waning by -19.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a abrupt curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 5.5%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per unit), while Mauritius ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-2.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of t-shirts imported in SADC contracted significantly to X units, with a decrease of -31.1% against 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 169%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
In value terms, t-shirt imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 36%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the main importer of t-shirts in SADC, with the volume of imports resulting at X units, which was approx. 67% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X units), constituting a 20% share of total imports. The following importers - Angola (X units), Namibia (X units), Mauritius (X units) and Mozambique (X units) - each finished at an 8.5% share of total imports.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of t-shirts. At the same time, Tanzania (+29.7%), Mauritius (+11.1%), Mozambique (+4.3%) and Namibia (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +29.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-8.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tanzania increased by +18 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported t-shirts in SADC, comprising 63% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -4.7%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+13.8% per year) and Mauritius (+10.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, jumping by 27% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable contraction. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
