Non-Chicken Table Egg Market Size in SADC

In 2021, after three years of growth, there was decline in the SADC non-chicken table egg market, when its value decreased by -0.7% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell modestly in the following year.

Non-Chicken Table Egg Production in SADC

In value terms, non-chicken table egg production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 39%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

Madagascar (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of non-chicken table egg production, comprising approx. 45% of total volume. Moreover, non-chicken table egg production in Madagascar exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Tanzania (X tons), threefold. South Africa (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 15% share.

In Madagascar, non-chicken table egg production remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Tanzania (+0.6% per year) and South Africa (+1.2% per year).

Non-Chicken Table Egg Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in shipments abroad of table eggs, excluding hen eggs, when their volume decreased by -12.2% to X tons. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 76%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-chicken table egg exports dropped to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a noticeable shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the key exporter of table eggs, excluding hen eggs, creating 50% of total exports. Namibia (X tons) held a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Swaziland (14%) and Zambia (12%).

Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +9.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zambia (+71.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +71.2% from 2012-2021. Namibia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Swaziland (-14.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+30 p.p.) and Zambia (+12 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Swaziland (-38.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest non-chicken table egg supplier in SADC, comprising 49% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Swaziland, with a 21% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +1.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Namibia (-3.5% per year) and Swaziland (-8.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 10% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 28%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Non-Chicken Table Egg Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2021, purchases abroad of table eggs, excluding hen eggs increased by 8.9% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 340% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-chicken table egg imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 when imports increased by 202%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Mozambique was the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which resulted at 56% of total imports. Botswana (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 18% share, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (11%) and Namibia (9.6%). Angola (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into Mozambique increased at an average annual rate of +44.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Botswana (+79.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +79.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Democratic Republic of the Congo (-4.1%), Namibia (-12.0%) and Angola (-25.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Mozambique (+54 p.p.) and Botswana (+18 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Democratic Republic of the Congo, Namibia and Angola saw its share reduced by -4.7%, -20.6% and -46% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, Mozambique ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported table eggs, excluding hen eggs in SADC, comprising 53% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Botswana ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 16% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Mozambique stood at +42.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Botswana (+46.5% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-5.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, surging by 8.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
