Table Flatware Market Size in SADC

The SADC table flatware market shrank to $X in 2022, waning by -5.6% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.2% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, table flatware production shrank modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +3.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC

After five years of decline, shipments abroad of table flatware increased by 6.3% to X tons in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 22%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, table flatware exports stood at $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 5%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 93% of total exports in 2022. Tanzania (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -7.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tanzania (+8.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +8.2% from 2012-2022. While the share of Tanzania (+2.4 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest table flatware supplier in SADC, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 0.4% share of total exports.

In South Africa, table flatware exports decreased by an average annual rate of -5.3% over the period from 2012-2022.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -2.9% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 22% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+2.1%).

Imports in SADC

Table flatware imports dropped sharply to X tons in 2022, declining by -16.7% compared with the year before. In general, imports showed a perceptible downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 19% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, table flatware imports contracted notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a noticeable contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the largest importer of table flatware in SADC, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was approx. 51% of total imports in 2022. Angola (X tons) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Madagascar (6.1%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (5.5%), Mozambique (4.7%) and Tanzania (4.7%). The following importers - Mauritius (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) - each finished at a 5.6% share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -1.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mauritius (+3.8%), Madagascar (+2.5%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +3.8% from 2012-2022. Mozambique experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Botswana (-4.1%), Angola (-7.8%) and Tanzania (-11.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+9.3 p.p.), Madagascar (+2.6 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.1 p.p.) and Mauritius (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Tanzania and Angola saw its share reduced by -7.3% and -8.4% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported table flatware in SADC, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Madagascar, with a 7.2% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -4.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (-6.6% per year) and Madagascar (+6.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -6.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 9.6% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2016 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
