Tall Oil Market Size in SADC

The SADC tall oil market contracted slightly to $X in 2021, which is down by -2.7% against the previous year. In general, consumption showed a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 6.7% against the previous year. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Tall Oil Production in SADC

In value terms, tall oil production fell modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a perceptible contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC

For the third year in a row, SADC recorded decline in shipments abroad of tall oil, which decreased by -21.5% to X tons in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw significant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 5,529%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, tall oil exports shrank dramatically to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 2,605%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) was the largest exporter of tall oil in SADC, mixing up 100% of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the tall oil exports, with a CAGR of +51.2% from 2012 to 2021. While the share of South Africa (+18 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest tall oil supplier in SADC.

In South Africa, tall oil exports increased at an average annual rate of +40.6% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 4.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 28% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to -7.0% per year.

Tall Oil Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was growth in supplies from abroad of tall oil, when their volume increased by 0.2% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 99% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tall oil imports dropped notably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, recorded a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 85% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 94% of total imports in 2021. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to tall oil imports into South Africa stood at -18.5%. Democratic Republic of the Congo experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa decreased by -3.2 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tall oil in SADC, comprising 83% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 2.7% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -18.1%.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, declining by -19.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated modest growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, tall oil import price increased by +49.8% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined significantly in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while South Africa totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+0.5%).
