Tamping Machinery Market Size in SADC

The SADC tamping machinery market was finally on the rise to reach $X in 2021, after two years of decline. Overall, consumption recorded a moderate expansion. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Tamping Machinery Production in SADC

In value terms, tamping machinery production expanded sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, posted tangible growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 33%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Tamping Machinery Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2021, overseas shipments of tamping or compacting machinery increased by 1.4% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after seven years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a abrupt setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 55%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tamping machinery exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, recording X units, which was approx. 92% of total exports in 2021. The following exporters - Malawi (X units) and Zambia (X units) - together made up 5.2% of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -4.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Malawi (+27.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +27.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Zambia (-10.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+35 p.p.) and Malawi (+3.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest tamping machinery supplier in SADC, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Malawi ($X), with a 6.1% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -3.8%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Malawi (+10.2% per year) and Zambia (-12.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, increasing by 19% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a notable expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 52%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malawi ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+0.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Tamping Machinery Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2021, purchases abroad of tamping or compacting machinery was finally on the rise to reach X units after two years of decline. Overall, imports, however, saw a pronounced slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 220% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, tamping machinery imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a perceptible curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 80% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the major importing country with an import of around X units, which resulted at 37% of total imports. Angola (X units) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 12% share, followed by Mozambique (11%), Botswana (9.4%), Tanzania (7.1%) and Zambia (5.2%). Namibia (X units) held a little share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -8.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mozambique (+31.9%) and Botswana (+9.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +31.9% from 2012-2021. Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Zambia (-6.6%), Namibia (-7.5%) and Angola (-11.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Mozambique, Botswana and Tanzania increased by +10, +6.8 and +3 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tamping or compacting machinery in SADC, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Botswana ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 9.6% share.

In South Africa, tamping machinery imports shrank by an average annual rate of -4.0% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Botswana (+16.4% per year) and Tanzania (-3.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, falling by -7.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 204%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per unit), while Angola ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
