Exports in SADC
In 2022, shipments abroad of telephonic or telegraphic switching apparatus decreased by -23.5% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports showed a sharp reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 108% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, telephonic switching apparatus exports fell rapidly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports recorded a noticeable decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 24% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, reaching X units, which was near 87% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - Angola (X units) and Botswana (X units) - together made up 5.2% of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -38.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Botswana (+35.6%) and Angola (+12.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +35.6% from 2012-2022. Angola (+2.9 p.p.) and Botswana (+2.3 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -13.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest telephonic switching apparatus supplier in SADC, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Botswana ($X), with a 1.5% share of total exports.
In South Africa, telephonic switching apparatus exports shrank by an average annual rate of -4.4% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Botswana (+27.4% per year) and Angola (+0.3% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, remaining stable against the previous year. Overall, the export price enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the export price increased by 18,716% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2017 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Angola ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+56.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
For the seventh consecutive year, SADC recorded decline in purchases abroad of telephonic or telegraphic switching apparatus, which decreased by -3.7% to X units in 2022. Overall, imports recorded a precipitous decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 187% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, telephonic switching apparatus imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -33.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 37%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa dominates imports structure, reaching X units, which was near 51% of total imports in 2022. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) took a 9.7% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Angola (7.8%), Botswana (6%), Tanzania (5.2%) and Zimbabwe (4.5%). Mauritius (X units) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to telephonic switching apparatus imports into South Africa stood at -45.0%. At the same time, Mauritius (+18.1%), Botswana (+15.1%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+4.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +18.1% from 2012-2022. Angola experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tanzania (-4.3%) and Zimbabwe (-7.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo (+9.7 p.p.), Angola (+7.7 p.p.), Botswana (+6 p.p.), Tanzania (+5.1 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+4.5 p.p.) and Mauritius (+4 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-48.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported telephonic or telegraphic switching apparatus in SADC, comprising 75% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 4.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 3.1% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to +2.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Angola (-2.6% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-3.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, standing approx. at the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a significant expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 27,710%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2021, and then declined slightly in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
