The SADC temporarily preserved vegetable market reduced modestly to $X in 2022, falling by -1.6% against the previous year. Temporarily Preserved Vegetable Production in SADC

In value terms, temporarily preserved vegetable production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +2.7% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 75%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth failed to regain momentum.

Temporarily Preserved Vegetable Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2022, shipments abroad of vegetables (temporarily preserved) decreased by -12.9% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after four years of growth. Overall, exports recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 29%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, temporarily preserved vegetable exports fell notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 37%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then contracted notably in the following year.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the key exporter of vegetables (temporarily preserved), generating 68% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Madagascar (X tons), mixing up a 28% share of total exports. Mozambique (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to temporarily preserved vegetable exports from South Africa stood at -12.6%. At the same time, Mozambique (+25.4%) and Madagascar (+8.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +25.4% from 2012-2022. While the share of Madagascar (+23 p.p.) and Mozambique (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-23 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest temporarily preserved vegetable supplier in SADC, comprising 75% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Madagascar ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.

In South Africa, temporarily preserved vegetable exports declined by an average annual rate of -1.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Madagascar (+7.8% per year) and Mozambique (+28.9% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -11.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 88% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Madagascar ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+12.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Temporarily Preserved Vegetable Imports

Imports in SADC

Temporarily preserved vegetable imports shrank sharply to X tons in 2022, dropping by -20.7% on the previous year. In general, imports recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 39% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, temporarily preserved vegetable imports shrank remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 54%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Botswana (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Namibia (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Lesotho (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Comoros (X tons) and Angola (X tons) represented roughly 95% of total imports in 2022.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Madagascar (with a CAGR of +42.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest temporarily preserved vegetable importing markets in SADC were Botswana ($X), Madagascar ($X) and Namibia ($X), together accounting for 55% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Madagascar, with a CAGR of +48.9%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a slight curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
