In value terms, non-cotton terry towelling exports contracted significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, exports recorded a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 33%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa (X square meters) and Botswana (X square meters) represented roughly 97% of total exports in 2021.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Botswana (with a CAGR of -1.0%).

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per square meter), while South Africa amounted to $X per square meter.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+1.8%).

Imports in SADC

In 2021, purchases abroad of terry towelling (excluding of cotton) was finally on the rise to reach X square meters for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X square meters. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-cotton terry towelling imports amounted to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of non-cotton terry towelling imports in 2021 were Mauritius (X square meters), South Africa (X square meters), Botswana (X square meters) and Madagascar (X square meters), together finishing at 76% of total import. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X square meters) and Namibia (X square meters), together making up a 15% share of total imports. Zimbabwe (X square meters) and Lesotho (X square meters) took a little share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Madagascar (with a CAGR of +15.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest non-cotton terry towelling importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Botswana ($X), together accounting for 60% of total imports.

Tanzania, with a CAGR of +15.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, non-cotton terry towelling import price increased by +69.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the import price increased by 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per square meter in 2013; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per square meter), while Lesotho ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
