Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, threaded metal articles exports soared to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, recorded a pronounced setback. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 89% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X tons), mixing up an 8.7% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -4.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zambia (+87.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +87.1% from 2012-2021. Zambia (+8.6 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -9% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest threaded metal articles supplier in SADC, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with a 5.5% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -4.9%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 3.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 25%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zambia stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-0.8%).

Imports in SADC

In 2021, approx. X tons of threaded articles of iron or steel were imported in SADC; with an increase of 3.7% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 33% of total imports. Tanzania (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Mozambique (11%), Angola (7.4%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (7.2%), Zambia (7.2%) and Mauritius (4.9%).

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -1.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mozambique (+20.4%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+18.8%), Tanzania (+11.2%) and Mauritius (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +20.4% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Angola (-7.0%) and Zambia (-9.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Mozambique, Tanzania and Democratic Republic of the Congo increased by +8.9, +8.8 and +5.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported threaded articles of iron or steel in SADC, comprising 36% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mozambique ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 9.7% share.

In South Africa, threaded metal articles imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mozambique (+18.1% per year) and Tanzania (+14.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 20% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+2.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
