In value terms, metal threading machine exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a abrupt slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 261%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X units, which was approx. 80% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X units), comprising a 5.1% share of total exports. Malawi (X units), Botswana (X units) and Mozambique (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -13.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Malawi (+38.3%), Botswana (+22.5%), Tanzania (+16.9%) and Mozambique (+3.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +38.3% from 2012-2021. Tanzania (+4.7 p.p.), Malawi (+4.2 p.p.), Botswana (+3.4 p.p.) and Mozambique (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -13.7% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest metal threading machine supplier in SADC, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Botswana ($X), with a 4.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Malawi, with a 3.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -6.8%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Botswana (+12.5% per year) and Malawi (+38.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, waning by -27.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate a prominent expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 1,543% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per unit), while Mozambique ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+7.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, purchases abroad of threading or tapping machines for working metal was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, metal threading machine imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a noticeable decrease. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the major importer of threading or tapping machines for working metal in SADC, with the volume of imports recording X units, which was approx. 40% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X units), Angola (X units), Namibia (X units) and Botswana (X units), together comprising a 42% share of total imports. The following importers - Mozambique (X units) and Mauritius (X units) - each recorded an 8.7% share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -12.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tanzania (+30.9%), Botswana (+21.5%), Mauritius (+6.9%) and Namibia (+6.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +30.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Angola (-12.3%) and Mozambique (-15.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+18 p.p.), Botswana (+5.2 p.p.), Namibia (+4.2 p.p.) and Mauritius (+3.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Mozambique (-5.2 p.p.), Angola (-6.4 p.p.) and South Africa (-21.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported threading or tapping machines for working metal in SADC, comprising 52% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 9.3% share.

In South Africa, metal threading machine imports declined by an average annual rate of -2.9% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Angola (-15.4% per year) and Tanzania (+23.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, with an increase of 3.2% against the previous year. Overall, the import price posted measured growth.
