In 2022, overseas shipments of threshing machinery except combine harvester-threshers decreased by -26.3% to X units for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports, however, showed resilient growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 860% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, threshing machinery exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a resilient increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 365% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Zambia was the main exporter of threshing machinery except combine harvester-threshers in SADC, with the volume of exports finishing at X units, which was near 63% of total exports in 2022. South Africa (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Tanzania (X units). All these countries together held near 36% share of total exports.

Zambia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the threshing machinery except combine harvester-threshers exports, with a CAGR of +26.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tanzania (+15.5%) and South Africa (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Zambia (+42 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -37.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) emerged as the largest threshing machinery supplier in SADC, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zambia ($X), with a 28% share of total exports.

In South Africa, threshing machinery exports increased at an average annual rate of +7.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Zambia (+19.2% per year) and Tanzania (+7.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, rising by 77% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, saw a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 134% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+3.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

After two years of growth, overseas purchases of threshing machinery except combine harvester-threshers decreased by -24.7% to X units in 2022. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a resilient expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 82%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2021, and then declined notably in the following year.

In value terms, threshing machinery imports fell to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when imports increased by 48% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.

Imports by Country

Tanzania represented the main importing country with an import of about X units, which reached 40% of total imports. Zimbabwe (X units) held a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by South Africa (14%) and Zambia (9.2%). The following importers - Malawi (X units), Mozambique (X units) and Angola (X units) - each recorded a 13% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Tanzania (with a CAGR of +38.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Tanzania ($X), South Africa ($X) and Zimbabwe ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 80% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Tanzania, with a CAGR of +39.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, picking up by 17% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Malawi ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
