Concrete Tile Market Size in SADC

The SADC concrete tile market declined to $X in 2022, reducing by -5.5% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Concrete Tile Production in SADC

In value terms, concrete tile production reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 18%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, approx. X tons of tiles, flagstones, bricks and similar articles, of cement, concrete or artificial stone were exported in SADC; increasing by 4.2% on 2021 figures. Total exports indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +33.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 28% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.

In value terms, concrete tile exports rose significantly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 38% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the two major exporters of tiles, flagstones, bricks and similar articles, of cement, concrete or artificial stone, namely South Africa and Botswana, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Botswana (with a CAGR of +10.1%).

In value terms, the largest concrete tile supplying countries in SADC were South Africa ($X) and Botswana ($X).

In terms of the main exporting countries, Botswana, with a CAGR of +15.2%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, growing by 1.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a mild contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while South Africa amounted to $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+4.7%).

Concrete Tile Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, concrete tile imports in SADC dropped to X tons, falling by -7% against 2021. In general, imports showed a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 20%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, concrete tile imports stood at $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when imports increased by 28%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the major importer of tiles, flagstones, bricks and similar articles, of cement, concrete or artificial stone in SADC, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 40% of total imports in 2022. Zimbabwe (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Lesotho (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons). All these countries together held near 45% share of total imports. The following importers - Mozambique (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) - together made up 7.2% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of +41.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.

In value terms, the largest concrete tile importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Zimbabwe ($X) and Lesotho ($X), together comprising 61% of total imports.

Zimbabwe, with a CAGR of +35.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 20% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 23%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Lesotho ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
