In 2021, shipments abroad of tiles, flagstones and similar articles of cement, concrete or artificial stone was finally on the rise to reach X tons after two years of decline. Total exports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +5.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, exports of tiles, flagstones and similar articles of cement, concrete or artificial stone surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports of attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

South Africa prevails in stone structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 96% of total exports in 2021. Zimbabwe (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe amounted to $X per ton.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, purchases abroad of tiles, flagstones and similar articles of cement, concrete or artificial stone increased by 26% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after three years of decline. In general, imports enjoyed buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 107% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports of attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, imports of tiles, flagstones and similar articles of cement, concrete or artificial stone expanded markedly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 82%. Over the period under review, imports of hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which accounted for 69% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Lesotho (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons), together creating a 15% share of total imports. The following importers - Zambia (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Angola (X tons) - together made up 11% of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +25.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mauritius (+33.2%), Botswana (+19.7%) and Swaziland (+10.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +33.2% from 2012-2021. Lesotho experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Zambia (-7.2%) and Angola (-20.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Mauritius and Botswana increased by +52, +1.9 and +1.8 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tiles, flagstones and similar articles of cement, concrete or artificial stone in SADC, comprising 37% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Lesotho, with an 8.5% share.

In South Africa, imports of tiles, flagstones and similar articles of cement, concrete or artificial stone expanded at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mauritius (+31.1% per year) and Lesotho (-12.8% per year).
