The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the major exporter of tomato ketchup and tomato sauces in SADC, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 77% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), generating a 20% share of total exports. Zimbabwe (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -2.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tanzania (+58.5%) and Zimbabwe (+18.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +58.5% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tanzania increased by +20 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+6.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2022, supplies from abroad of tomato ketchup and tomato sauces decreased by -3.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Total imports indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -5.5% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 18%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Total imports indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +59.9% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.

Imports by Country

The countries with the highest levels of tomato ketchup imports in 2022 were Botswana (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), together finishing at 56% of total import. Namibia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 8.9% share, followed by Tanzania (7.3%), Angola (5.9%) and Lesotho (5.7%).

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by South Africa (with a CAGR of +11.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Botswana ($X), South Africa ($X) and Namibia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 59% share of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, South Africa, with a CAGR of +13.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 16%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
