Tomato Puree Market Size in SADC
The SADC tomato puree market amounted to $X in 2022, increasing by 3.3% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, consumption decreased by -1.6% against 2020 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, tomato puree production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Tomato Puree Exports
Exports in SADC
In 2022, exports of tomato puree and paste in SADC shrank to X tons, reducing by -13% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 85% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, tomato puree exports fell slightly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 96% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped in the following year.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 83% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Swaziland (X tons), mixing up a 6.9% share of total exports. The following exporters - Tanzania (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) - together made up 9.1% of total exports.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +14.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Swaziland (+27.0%), Namibia (+9.7%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.2%) and Tanzania (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +27.0% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa and Swaziland increased by +25 and +5.2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest tomato puree supplier in SADC, comprising 82% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Swaziland ($X), with a 10% share of total exports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 2.9% share.
In South Africa, tomato puree exports increased at an average annual rate of +12.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Swaziland (+35.2% per year) and Tanzania (-0.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+6.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Tomato Puree Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of tomato puree and paste imported in SADC skyrocketed to X tons, picking up by 19% against the year before. In general, imports, however, showed a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 20%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, tomato puree imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 22%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the largest importer of tomato puree and paste, making up 42% of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) took a 23% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Angola (18%). The following importers - Mozambique (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Comoros (X tons) - together made up 12% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Comoros (with a CAGR of +10.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest tomato puree importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and Angola ($X), with a combined 85% share of total imports. Mauritius, Comoros, Mozambique and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 9%.
Among the main importing countries, Comoros, with a CAGR of +10.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 9.1%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Comoros ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
