Transmission Apparatus Market Size in SADC

In 2021, the SADC transmission apparatus market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, transmission apparatus production expanded modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -23.8% against 2017 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2018 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2021, transmission apparatus exports in SADC skyrocketed to X tons, rising by 39% compared with 2020. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 88%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, transmission apparatus exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 85%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 88% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X tons), achieving a 9.1% share of total exports. Zambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to transmission apparatus exports from South Africa stood at -3.0%. At the same time, Mauritius (+6.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +6.5% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Zambia (-23.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+21 p.p.) and Mauritius (+6.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Zambia (-9.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest transmission apparatus supplier in SADC, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 6% share of total exports.

In South Africa, transmission apparatus exports declined by an average annual rate of -7.5% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+1.8% per year) and Zambia (-18.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, which is down by -13.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price saw a slight slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 an increase of 57%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mauritius ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+7.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in purchases abroad of transmission apparatus incorporating reception apparatus, when their volume increased by 25% to X tons. In general, imports, however, showed a slight decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 51% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, transmission apparatus imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the largest importer of transmission apparatus incorporating reception apparatus, generating 36% of total imports. Tanzania (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 14% share, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (9.7%), Angola (7.5%), Zambia (6.7%) and Zimbabwe (6.4%). Malawi (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -5.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tanzania (+16.3%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+12.7%) and Zambia (+1.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +16.3% from 2012-2021. Zimbabwe and Malawi experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Angola (-11.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tanzania (+11 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+6.8 p.p.) and Zambia (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola and South Africa saw its share reduced by -11.3% and -16.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported transmission apparatus incorporating reception apparatus in SADC, comprising 74% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 4.6% share of total imports. It was followed by Zimbabwe, with a 3.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled -1.7%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+24.0% per year) and Zimbabwe (+11.2% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 23% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
