Travel Set Market Size in SADC

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the SADC travel set market, when its value decreased by -7.6% to $X. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate buoyant growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2020, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, travel set production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a strong expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 84%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.

Exports in SADC

In 2021, travel set exports in SADC declined to X units, with a decrease of -14.2% against 2020. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 65% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, travel set exports declined to $X in 2021. In general, exports faced a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 107%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the key exporting country with an export of around X units, which finished at 42% of total exports. Tanzania (X units) took a 27% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Mauritius (20%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (4.5%). Mozambique (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for South Africa (with a CAGR of -0.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Mauritius ($X) and Tanzania ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, with a combined 91% share of total exports.

Tanzania, with a CAGR of -2.0%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 7.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a pronounced decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 40%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per unit), while Mozambique ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

For the fifth consecutive year, SADC recorded decline in purchases abroad of travel sets, which decreased by -13% to X units in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, travel set imports dropped significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 20% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Tanzania represented the largest importer of travel sets in SADC, with the volume of imports recording X units, which was near 38% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Angola (X units) and Seychelles (X units), together achieving a 44% share of total imports. Botswana (X units) and Malawi (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Malawi (with a CAGR of +24.6%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest travel set importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a combined 75% share of total imports. Seychelles, Angola, Malawi and Botswana lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 14%.

Among the main importing countries, Malawi, with a CAGR of +28.7%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, with a decrease of -7.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 94% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malawi (+3.3%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
