Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 35%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 54% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Botswana (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), together achieving a 27% share of total imports. The following importers - Mozambique (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) - each accounted for a 6.7% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to iron or steel tube fitting imports into South Africa stood at -1.9%. At the same time, Mozambique (+5.8%), Tanzania (+3.4%) and Botswana (+2.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +5.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Namibia (-3.3%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (-4.2%) and Angola (-8.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tanzania (+3 p.p.), Botswana (+2.8 p.p.) and Mozambique (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Angola (-6.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tube or pipe fittings (of iron or steel) in SADC, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 7% share.

In South Africa, iron or steel tube fitting imports shrank by an average annual rate of -1.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (-9.6% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (-7.4% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 4.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 7.7% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+1.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
