Turkey Meat Market Size in SADC
The SADC turkey meat market dropped notably to $X in 2022, waning by -23.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a noticeable curtailment. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Turkey Meat Production in SADC
In value terms, turkey meat production reduced slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 121% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Madagascar (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Zambia (X tons), together accounting for 99% of total production.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Zambia (with a CAGR of +2.2%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average turkey meat yield dropped to X kg per head in 2022, leveling off at the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 1%. Over the period under review, the turkey meat yield hit record highs at X kg per head in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
In 2022, the number of animals slaughtered for turkey meat production in SADC contracted modestly to X heads, leveling off at the previous year's figure. Overall, the number of producing animals, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the number of producing animals increased by 2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, this number attained the peak level at X heads in 2021, and then declined modestly in the following year.

Exports in SADC
In 2022, approx. X tons of turkey meat were exported in SADC; with an increase of 14% compared with the previous year. In general, exports, however, recorded a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 44%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, turkey meat exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 43%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the major exporter of turkey meat, comprising 63% of total exports. Namibia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 25% share, followed by Zambia (7.5%). Botswana (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -9.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Botswana (+23.6%), Zambia (+22.7%) and Namibia (+19.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +23.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Swaziland (-1.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Namibia (+22 p.p.), Zambia (+7 p.p.) and Botswana (+2.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-32 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest turkey meat supplier in SADC, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 5.4% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -7.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Namibia (+21.0% per year) and Zambia (+24.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 18% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.7%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC
In 2022, approx. X tons of turkey meat were imported in SADC; waning by -27.2% on the year before. Overall, imports showed a noticeable contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, turkey meat imports contracted rapidly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 61%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2022, Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) represented the largest importer of turkey meat, committing 46% of total imports. South Africa (X tons) held a 29% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Angola (16%) and Mozambique (4.9%).
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +14.8%), while imports for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and Angola ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 87% share of total imports. Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 5.9%.
Among the main importing countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +13.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the imports figures.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -10.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 31% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted in the following year.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
