In 2021, the SADC passenger car tyre market was finally on the rise to reach $X after two years of decline. In general, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

In value terms, passenger car tyre production reached $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the production volume increased by 31%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of tyres for motor cars decreased by -5% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after four years of growth. Over the period under review, exports showed a slight reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 27%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, passenger car tyre exports surged to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of tyres for motor cars, namely South Africa, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of tyres for motor cars. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa increased by +3.1 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest passenger car tyre supplier in SADC.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to +1.9%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, increasing by 25% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to +2.5% per year.

In 2021, purchases abroad of tyres for motor cars was finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, passenger car tyre imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, finishing at X units, which was approx. 67% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X units), committing a 6.7% share of total imports. Angola (X units), Zimbabwe (X units), Mauritius (X units), Zambia (X units), Mozambique (X units), Botswana (X units) and Namibia (X units) held a minor share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +5.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mozambique (+6.8%) and Mauritius (+5.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +6.8% from 2012-2021. Zambia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tanzania (-1.0%), Zimbabwe (-1.9%), Angola (-4.5%), Namibia (-6.1%) and Botswana (-7.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+14 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Zimbabwe, Namibia, Tanzania, Botswana and Angola saw its share reduced by -1.7%, -2.3%, -2.4%, -3.3% and -3.6% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported tyres for motor cars in SADC, comprising 56% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with an 8.8% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 5.3% share.

In South Africa, passenger car tyre imports increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (-1.7% per year) and Angola (-5.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, rising by 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a slight shrinkage. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+2.9%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
