Non-Alloy Steel U-Section Market Size in SADC
The SADC non-alloy steel u-section market fell to $X in 2022, reducing by -5.2% against the previous year. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a mild decrease. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Non-Alloy Steel U-Section Production in SADC
In value terms, non-alloy steel u-section production declined slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate a noticeable setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 12%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC
In 2022, shipments abroad of u-sections of non-alloy steel decreased by -4.1% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after three years of growth. Over the period under review, exports saw a pronounced setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 68% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, non-alloy steel u-section exports rose slightly to $X in 2022. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 82% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 94% of total exports in 2022. The following exporters - Namibia (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) - together made up 5.4% of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to non-alloy steel u-section exports from South Africa stood at -2.9%. At the same time, Namibia (+53.5%) and Zambia (+21.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +53.5% from 2012-2022. While the share of Namibia (+2.9 p.p.) and Zambia (+2.1 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-5.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest non-alloy steel u-section supplier in SADC, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zambia ($X), with a 2.4% share of total exports.
In South Africa, non-alloy steel u-section exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Zambia (+18.3% per year) and Namibia (+45.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, surging by 6.1% against the previous year. Export price indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, non-alloy steel u-section export price increased by +62.9% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 an increase of 49%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Non-Alloy Steel U-Section Imports
Imports in SADC
After three years of growth, purchases abroad of u-sections of non-alloy steel decreased by -24.8% to X tons in 2022. In general, imports, however, enjoyed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 74%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced rapidly in the following year.
In value terms, non-alloy steel u-section imports fell to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a moderate expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Imports by Country
Tanzania (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) represented roughly 79% of total imports in 2022. The following importers - Angola (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Malawi (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) - together made up 19% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Botswana (with a CAGR of +20.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest non-alloy steel u-section importing markets in SADC were Zimbabwe ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Zambia ($X), together accounting for 65% of total imports.
Tanzania, with a CAGR of +21.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, rising by 13% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 21% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
