The SADC umbrella and walking-stick market dropped rapidly to $X in 2022, declining by -19.6% against the previous year. In general, consumption recorded a pronounced descent. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Umbrella And Walking-Stick Production in SADC

In value terms, umbrella and walking-stick production contracted remarkably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 40,348% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, exports of umbrellas and walking-sticks in SADC soared to X units, picking up by 24% compared with the year before. Overall, exports, however, showed a pronounced shrinkage. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, umbrella and walking-stick exports rose remarkably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 45%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the key exporter of umbrellas and walking-sticks in SADC, with the volume of exports finishing at X units, which was approx. 86% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X units), constituting a 10% share of total exports. Namibia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to umbrella and walking-stick exports from South Africa stood at -1.9%. At the same time, Mauritius (+22.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +22.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Namibia (-10.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mauritius (+9.4 p.p.) and South Africa (+7.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Namibia (-2.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest umbrella and walking-stick supplier in SADC, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with a 5.9% share of total exports.

In South Africa, umbrella and walking-stick exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mauritius (+13.8% per year) and Namibia (-19.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, falling by -9.1% against the previous year. Export price indicated a noticeable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 53% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Namibia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+1.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Umbrella And Walking-Stick Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, umbrella and walking-stick imports in SADC surged to X units, with an increase of 20% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 50%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, umbrella and walking-stick imports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a pronounced descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, recording X units, which was near 80% of total imports in 2022. The following importers - Mauritius (X units), Tanzania (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) and Madagascar (X units) - together made up 11% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to umbrella and walking-stick imports into South Africa stood at -3.7%. Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Mauritius (-4.0%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (-14.4%) and Madagascar (-18.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa increased by +11 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported umbrellas and walking-sticks in SADC, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 7.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to -2.0%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (-0.2% per year) and Mauritius (+3.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2022, falling by -40.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, posted slight growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 32%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
