Umbrella Market Size in SADC

The SADC umbrella market contracted to $X in 2022, which is down by -6.2% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, saw a slight descent. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Umbrella Production in SADC

In value terms, umbrella production shrank rapidly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 442% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Umbrella Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2022, approx. X units of umbrellas were exported in SADC; increasing by 24% on the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 28% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, umbrella exports rose significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 45% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, accounting for X units, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X units), comprising a 5.1% share of total exports. Namibia (X units) took a minor share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -1.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mauritius (+12.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +12.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Namibia (-9.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+12 p.p.) and Mauritius (+3.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Namibia saw its share reduced by -2.6% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest umbrella supplier in SADC, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 3.7% share of total exports.

In South Africa, umbrella exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+8.3% per year) and Namibia (-19.3% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, dropping by -9% against the previous year. Export price indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, umbrella export price decreased by -4.6% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the export price increased by 53% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Namibia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+1.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Umbrella Imports

Imports in SADC

Umbrella imports soared to X units in 2022, picking up by 20% against 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 53%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, umbrella imports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 27%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, accounting for X units, which was near 80% of total imports in 2022. Mauritius (X units), Tanzania (X units), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Madagascar (X units) and Mozambique (X units) held a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -3.8% from 2012 to 2022. Tanzania and Mozambique experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. Mauritius (-4.6%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (-14.4%) and Madagascar (-18.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+11 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo (-3.7 p.p.) and Madagascar (-6.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported umbrellas in SADC, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Mozambique, with an 8.1% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -2.4%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (-0.3% per year) and Mozambique (+6.5% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, which is down by -41.6% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a slight expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (+16.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
