In 2021, approx. X tons of uncoated kraft liner were exported in SADC; with a decrease of -25.7% against the previous year. Overall, exports showed a drastic downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, uncoated kraft liner exports reduced dramatically to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when exports increased by 2.8% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 76% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), committing a 23% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to uncoated kraft liner exports from South Africa stood at -7.9%. At the same time, Tanzania (+14.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +14.3% from 2012-2021. While the share of Tanzania (+19 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-19.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest uncoated kraft liner supplier in SADC, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 30% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -9.7%.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 12% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a slight shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 18%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while South Africa stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+1.4%).

Imports in SADC

In 2021, the amount of uncoated kraft liner imported in SADC rose markedly to X tons, increasing by 6.5% on the previous year's figure. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, uncoated kraft liner imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +4.3% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 41% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the largest importer of uncoated kraft liner in SADC, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 38% of total imports in 2021. Zimbabwe (X tons) held a 20% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Angola (13%), Zambia (12%) and Namibia (6.6%). The following importers - Tanzania (X tons), Lesotho (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) - each amounted to a 5.6% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Angola (with a CAGR of +24.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest uncoated kraft liner importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Zimbabwe ($X) and Zambia ($X), together comprising 68% of total imports. These countries were followed by Angola, Namibia, Tanzania, Lesotho and Democratic Republic of the Congo, which together accounted for a further 26%.

Among the main importing countries, Angola, with a CAGR of +23.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 6.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the import price increased by 13%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Namibia ($X per ton) and Tanzania ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) and Lesotho ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
