The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, orange juice (single strength) exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 102%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the one major exporters of orange juice (single strength), namely South Africa, represented more than two-thirds of total export.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the orange juice (single strength) exports, with a CAGR of -3.9% from 2012 to 2021. While the share of South Africa (+5.7 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest orange juice (single strength) supplier in SADC.

In South Africa, orange juice (single strength) exports plunged by an average annual rate of -5.6% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -1.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to -1.8% per year.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of orange juice (single strength) increased by 36% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, imports, however, recorded a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 49% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Seychelles (X tons) took an 8.8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tanzania (7.9%), Madagascar (6.1%), Malawi (5.6%) and Zambia (5.4%). Botswana (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Lesotho (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Angola (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Madagascar (with a CAGR of +48.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest orange juice (single strength) importing markets in SADC were Mozambique ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and Tanzania ($X), with a combined 52% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Seychelles, Zambia, Malawi, Madagascar, Swaziland, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mauritius, Lesotho and Angola, which together accounted for a further 46%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Madagascar, with a CAGR of +45.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 4.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a slight shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 24%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while Seychelles ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+4.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
