In 2021, the SADC underground continuous-action elevator market increased by 14% to $X for the first time since 2014, thus ending a six-year declining trend. Overall, consumption, however, faced a abrupt setback. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, underground continuous-action elevator production rose sharply to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, saw a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 14% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in SADC
In 2021, overseas shipments of underground continuous-action elevators and conveyors increased by 46% to X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a dramatic decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 846%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, underground continuous-action elevator exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a dramatic decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 1,044%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Zambia represented the major exporter of underground continuous-action elevators and conveyors in SADC, with the volume of exports accounting for X units, which was approx. 66% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X units), comprising a 33% share of total exports.
Zambia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the underground continuous-action elevators and conveyors exports, with a CAGR of +36.1% from 2012 to 2021. South Africa (-44.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Zambia (+66 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -67.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest underground continuous-action elevator supplier in SADC, comprising 66% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zambia ($X), with a 27% share of total exports.
In South Africa, underground continuous-action elevator exports shrank by an average annual rate of -36.8% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, waning by -12.1% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, posted resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 167%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Zambia stood at $X per unit.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+13.8%).
Underground Continuous-Action Elevator Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2021, purchases abroad of underground continuous-action elevators and conveyors increased by 66% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports posted resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 90%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, underground continuous-action elevator imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed prominent growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 198% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Botswana (X units) was the key importer of underground continuous-action elevators and conveyors, generating 63% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Zambia (X units), South Africa (X units) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), together creating a 32% share of total imports. The following importers - Madagascar (X units) and Malawi (X units) - each amounted to a 4% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to underground continuous-action elevator imports into Botswana stood at +28.4%. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+44.6%), Madagascar (+29.6%), South Africa (+14.6%) and Malawi (+7.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +44.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Zambia (-4.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Botswana (+51 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+5.5 p.p.), South Africa (+3.4 p.p.) and Madagascar (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Zambia (-34.4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Botswana ($X), Zambia ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 83% share of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +42.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, picking up by 74% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, recorded a slight slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 85% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
