In 2021, approx. X tons of unvulcanised rubber were exported in SADC; increasing by 311% compared with the year before. Overall, exports showed a buoyant increase. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 92% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Namibia (X tons), mixing up a 7.8% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to unvulcanised rubber exports from South Africa stood at +18.3%. At the same time, Namibia (+70.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Namibia emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +70.0% from 2012-2021. Namibia (+7.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -7.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest unvulcanised rubber supplier in SADC, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Namibia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at +23.0%.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -49.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, posted a pronounced expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 281%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2020, and then shrank sharply in the following year.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while South Africa stood at $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+4.0%).
Unvulcanised Rubber Imports
Imports in SADC
Unvulcanised rubber imports totaled X tons in 2021, picking up by 12% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 128% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, unvulcanised rubber imports rose remarkably to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, showed a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 91% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 85% of total imports in 2021. The following importers - Tanzania (X tons), Swaziland (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) - together made up 12% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to unvulcanised rubber imports into South Africa stood at -4.9%. At the same time, Zambia (+9.3%), Swaziland (+6.2%) and Tanzania (+4.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zambia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +9.3% from 2012-2021. Zimbabwe experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Swaziland and Tanzania increased by +2.2 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported unvulcanised rubber in SADC, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 5.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 3.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at -6.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (+8.2% per year) and Zambia (+12.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, flattening at the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a mild descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 when the import price increased by 20%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while Swaziland ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
