The SADC unwrought zinc alloys market totaled $X in 2022, increasing by 2.3% against the previous year. The total production indicated a tangible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -2.5% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 21% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC
In 2022, shipments abroad of unwrought zinc alloys increased by 21% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Overall, exports saw a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 348% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, unwrought zinc alloys exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports saw a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 522% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
Namibia dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 87% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), committing a 7.6% share of total exports. Swaziland (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Namibia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the unwrought zinc alloys exports, with a CAGR of +28.9% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Africa (+24.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Swaziland (-4.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Namibia (+31 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Swaziland (-29.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Namibia ($X) remains the largest unwrought zinc alloys supplier in SADC, comprising 88% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 6.8% share of total exports.
In Namibia, unwrought zinc alloys exports increased at an average annual rate of +27.2% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+21.2% per year) and Swaziland (-2.2% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 39% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Unwrought Zinc Alloys Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2022, imports of unwrought zinc alloys in SADC dropped to X tons, which is down by -7.9% against 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 409% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, unwrought zinc alloys imports shrank modestly to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 387%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 80% of total imports in 2022. Tanzania (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Zimbabwe (X tons). All these countries together held near 11% share of total imports. Zambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the unwrought zinc alloys imports, with a CAGR of +23.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+10.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Zambia (-5.2%) and Tanzania (-12.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa increased by +56 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported unwrought zinc alloys in SADC, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 5.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 3.6% share.
In South Africa, unwrought zinc alloys imports expanded at an average annual rate of +23.2% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tanzania (-9.9% per year) and Zambia (-1.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, growing by 5.3% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 33% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2018; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
