Vaccine Market Size in SADC

The SADC vaccine market declined dramatically to $X in 2022, falling by -31.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, showed a buoyant increase. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X, and then contracted sharply in the following year.

Vaccine Production in SADC

In value terms, vaccine production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a abrupt contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 2.9%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Vaccine Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2022, approx. X tons of vaccines for human medicine were exported in SADC; with an increase of 7% on 2021 figures. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when exports increased by 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, vaccine exports reduced notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a deep reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 92%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the key exporter of vaccines for human medicine in SADC, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 69% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Botswana (X tons) and Swaziland (X tons), together generating a 27% share of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to vaccine exports from South Africa stood at +1.3%. At the same time, Botswana (+51.1%) and Tanzania (+27.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +51.1% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Swaziland (-24.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa, Botswana and Tanzania increased by +44, +15 and +3.1 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest vaccine supplier in SADC, comprising 68% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Swaziland ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 4.8% share.

In South Africa, vaccine exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Swaziland (-18.7% per year) and Botswana (+24.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -38.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 134%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+7.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Vaccine Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2022, approx. X tons of vaccines for human medicine were imported in SADC; which is down by -30.3% compared with 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 243%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons, and then declined dramatically in the following year.

In value terms, vaccine imports declined notably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 170% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X, and then fell notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 48% of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) took an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Zimbabwe (7.8%), Tanzania (7.6%), Zambia (6.2%) and Angola (5.1%). Malawi (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+13.0%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+10.6%), Zambia (+9.7%), Tanzania (+5.9%) and Angola (+4.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +13.0% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Malawi (-1.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zimbabwe and Zambia increased by +4.3, +3.9 and +2 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported vaccines for human medicine in SADC, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 12% share of total imports. It was followed by Tanzania, with a 7% share.

In South Africa, vaccine imports increased at an average annual rate of +6.9% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+16.6% per year) and Tanzania (+8.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, leveling off at the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the import price increased by 26% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2021 to 2022, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Zambia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+9.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
