In 2022, the SADC vacuum vessel market increased by 32% to $X, rising for the fourth consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, consumption showed a prominent increase. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, vacuum vessel production expanded slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when the production volume increased by 5,322% against the previous year. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2022, production growth remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, the amount of vacuum vessels exported in SADC was estimated at X units, growing by 4.1% against 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 24% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, vacuum vessel exports totaled $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 39%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X units) represented the major exporter of vacuum vessels, achieving 70% of total exports. Angola (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Tanzania (9.4%). Mauritius (X units) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to vacuum vessel exports from South Africa stood at +2.7%. At the same time, Mauritius (+40.5%) and Angola (+32.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +40.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tanzania (-2.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Angola (+14 p.p.), South Africa (+11 p.p.) and Mauritius (+3.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Tanzania (-4 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest vacuum vessel supplier in SADC, comprising 76% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mauritius ($X), with a 9.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Angola, with a 6.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to +3.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (+62.6% per year) and Angola (+30.1% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 9.2% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.0%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 36% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per unit), while Angola ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+15.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC

Vacuum vessel imports soared to X units in 2022, rising by 23% on the previous year. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 46%. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.

In value terms, vacuum vessel imports rose notably to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +41.3% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 33%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Tanzania (X units) was the key importer of vacuum vessels, constituting 60% of total imports. South Africa (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Mozambique (X units) and Madagascar (X units). All these countries together held approx. 30% share of total imports. Angola (X units) and Malawi (X units) took a little share of total imports.

Tanzania experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of vacuum vessels. At the same time, Madagascar (+12.7%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+11.3%) and South Africa (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +12.7% from 2012-2022. Malawi experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Mozambique (-2.8%) and Angola (-6.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Democratic Republic of the Congo (+5.4 p.p.) and Madagascar (+3.4 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Tanzania, Mozambique and Angola saw its share reduced by -1.9%, -2.5% and -4.2% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest vacuum vessel importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Angola ($X), with a combined 72% share of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo, Madagascar, Malawi and Mozambique lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 19%.

Madagascar, with a CAGR of +22.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, declining by -13.6% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2022, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.8%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 32% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit, and then dropped in the following year.
