Non-Propelled Vehicle Market Size in SADC

In 2021, the SADC non-propelled vehicle market increased by 8.5% to $X, rising for the third year in a row after four years of decline. Overall, consumption, however, recorded a sharp shrinkage. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-propelled vehicle production rose notably to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production continues to indicate resilient growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 180%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in SADC

After two years of decline, overseas shipments of vehicles not mechanically propelled increased by 6.6% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a sharp curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 16% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, non-propelled vehicle exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced decline. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X units) was the largest exporter of vehicles not mechanically propelled, constituting 89% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Zimbabwe (X units), creating a 10% share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -36.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+10.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +10.7% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Zimbabwe increased by +10 percentage points.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest non-propelled vehicle supplier in SADC, comprising 92% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 6.3% share of total exports.

In South Africa, non-propelled vehicle exports decreased by an average annual rate of -3.2% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, picking up by 28% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the export price increased by 1,266%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Zimbabwe amounted to $X per unit.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+53.5%).

Imports in SADC

After two years of growth, purchases abroad of vehicles not mechanically propelled decreased by -5.6% to X units in 2021. Overall, imports recorded a dramatic decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 49%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, non-propelled vehicle imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a mild shrinkage. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the major importer of vehicles not mechanically propelled in SADC, with the volume of imports amounting to X units, which was near 43% of total imports in 2021. Mozambique (X units) took a 10% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Tanzania (10%), Angola (8%) and Zambia (7.9%). Zimbabwe (X units), Botswana (X units), Namibia (X units), Malawi (X units), Swaziland (X units) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -43.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tanzania (+20.2%), Mozambique (+8.5%), Malawi (+2.5%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +20.2% from 2012-2021. Zambia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Zimbabwe (-1.1%), Botswana (-1.5%), Namibia (-7.1%), Angola (-18.2%) and Swaziland (-19.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Tanzania (+10 p.p.), Mozambique (+10 p.p.), Zambia (+7.8 p.p.), Angola (+7.4 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+4.4 p.p.), Botswana (+3.4 p.p.), Namibia (+3.3 p.p.), Malawi (+2.1 p.p.), Swaziland (+1.6 p.p.) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -56.2% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.

In value terms, the largest non-propelled vehicle importing markets in SADC were South Africa ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Mozambique ($X), together comprising 52% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Tanzania, with a CAGR of +28.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, surging by 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 an increase of 5,151%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+68.4%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
