Veneer Sheet Market Size in SADC
The SADC veneer sheet market contracted rapidly to $X in 2022, reducing by -27.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The total production indicated a notable expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -1.0% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 22%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of veneer sheets and sheets for plywood and other wood sawn lengthwise exported in SADC surged to X square meters, rising by 40% on 2021. Overall, exports saw a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when exports increased by 109%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, veneer sheet exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports posted a prominent increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 79% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
Tanzania prevails in exports structure, amounting to X square meters, which was approx. 87% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X square meters), committing a 5.7% share of total exports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X square meters), South Africa (X square meters) and Zimbabwe (X square meters) took a relatively small share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to veneer sheet exports from Tanzania stood at +65.6%. At the same time, Mozambique (+72.2%), Zimbabwe (+68.9%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+8.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +72.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-4.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tanzania, Mozambique and Zimbabwe increased by +77, +5.3 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Tanzania ($X) remains the largest veneer sheet supplier in SADC, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 14% share of total exports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 7.7% share.
In Tanzania, veneer sheet exports increased at an average annual rate of +39.6% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: South Africa (-5.2% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+7.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per square meter, picking up by 1.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a deep slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 6.8%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per square meter. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per square meter), while Zimbabwe (less than $X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in SADC
In 2022, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in supplies from abroad of veneer sheets and sheets for plywood and other wood sawn lengthwise, when their volume decreased by -5.8% to X square meters. In general, imports saw a abrupt shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when imports increased by 3.4%. The volume of import peaked at X square meters in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, veneer sheet imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Overall, imports continue to indicate a perceptible decline. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
South Africa prevails in imports structure, accounting for X square meters, which was approx. 65% of total imports in 2022. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X square meters) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Namibia (X square meters). All these countries together held approx. 12% share of total imports. Angola (X square meters), Mauritius (X square meters), Seychelles (X square meters), Botswana (X square meters), Malawi (X square meters), Madagascar (X square meters), Tanzania (X square meters) and Zambia (X square meters) held a relatively small share of total imports.
Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -13.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+24.2%), Malawi (+21.4%), Madagascar (+15.0%) and Mauritius (+13.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +24.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Angola (-1.3%), Zambia (-6.0%), Namibia (-6.3%), Seychelles (-7.2%), Tanzania (-10.3%) and Botswana (-11.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo (+6.8 p.p.), Mauritius (+3 p.p.), Angola (+2.7 p.p.), Namibia (+2.1 p.p.), Malawi (+2.1 p.p.) and Madagascar (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-16.9 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported veneer sheets and sheets for plywood and other wood sawn lengthwise in SADC, comprising 86% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Angola ($X), with a 2.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 2% share.
In South Africa, veneer sheet imports shrank by an average annual rate of -3.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Angola (-1.7% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+14.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per square meter, growing by 27% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate buoyant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 42%. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to continue growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per square meter), while Namibia ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.
