Exports in SADC
In 2021, overseas shipments of vitrifiable enamels and glazes for ceramics, enamelling or glass increased by 41% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 47% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, enamels and glazes exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a slight slump. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was approx. 93% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), creating a 7.3% share of total exports.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of vitrifiable enamels and glazes for ceramics, enamelling or glass. At the same time, Tanzania (+53.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +53.6% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tanzania increased by +7.3 percentage points.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest enamels and glazes supplier in SADC, comprising 98% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tanzania ($X), with a 2.1% share of total exports.
In South Africa, enamels and glazes exports shrank by an average annual rate of -1.4% over the period from 2012-2021.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a slight slump. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 15%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tanzania stood at $X per ton.

Imports in SADC
In 2021, approx. X tons of vitrifiable enamels and glazes for ceramics, enamelling or glass were imported in SADC; increasing by 35% against the previous year. In general, imports enjoyed a significant increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 240%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, enamels and glazes imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 141%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
Tanzania represented the key importer of vitrifiable enamels and glazes for ceramics, enamelling or glass in SADC, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was approx. 64% of total imports in 2021. South Africa (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 23% share, followed by Angola (8.9%). Zimbabwe (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
Tanzania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the vitrifiable enamels and glazes for ceramics, enamelling or glass imports, with a CAGR of +116.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Angola (+87.0%) and South Africa (+7.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Zimbabwe experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tanzania and Angola increased by +64 and +8.7 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, Tanzania ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported vitrifiable enamels and glazes for ceramics, enamelling or glass in SADC, comprising 62% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 21% share of total imports. It was followed by Angola, with a 9.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Tanzania amounted to +104.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-1.6% per year) and Angola (+84.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 33% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a abrupt decrease. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (-1.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
