For the fourth year in a row, the SADC market for spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 25% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption enjoyed a remarkable increase. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Production of Spirits, Liqueurs And Other Spirituous Beverages in SADC

In value terms, production of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages reduced to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -3.4% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when the production volume increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Exports in SADC

In 2022, exports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages in SADC skyrocketed to X litres, rising by 18% on the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 40%. Over the period under review, the exports of reached the maximum at X litres in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, exports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a pronounced decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when exports increased by 30% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the largest exporting country with an export of about X litres, which recorded 64% of total exports. Tanzania (X litres) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 22% share, followed by Zambia (11%). Malawi (X litres) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -3.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Tanzania (+24.0%), Zambia (+17.7%) and Malawi (+3.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +24.0% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tanzania and Zambia increased by +19 and +8.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages supplier in SADC, comprising 80% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tanzania ($X), with a 9.8% share of total exports. It was followed by Malawi, with a 5.1% share.

In South Africa, exports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages shrank by an average annual rate of -2.5% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tanzania (+23.2% per year) and Malawi (+16.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per litre, approximately mirroring the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a mild decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 21%. The level of export peaked at $X per litre in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Malawi ($X per litre), while Zambia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malawi (+12.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports of Spirits, Liqueurs And Other Spirituous Beverages

Imports in SADC

In 2022, overseas purchases of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages increased by 71% to X litres, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports of attained the maximum at X litres in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, imports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a temperate expansion. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X litres) represented the largest importer of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages, making up 39% of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo (X litres) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Tanzania (X litres), Angola (X litres) and Zimbabwe (X litres). All these countries together took near 42% share of total imports. The following importers - Zambia (X litres) and Namibia (X litres) - each recorded an 8.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages imports into South Africa stood at +9.1%. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+23.8%), Tanzania (+18.8%), Zimbabwe (+12.1%) and Zambia (+3.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +23.8% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Namibia (-5.1%) and Angola (-17.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Tanzania and Zimbabwe increased by +23, +16, +7.3 and +4 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages in SADC, comprising 58% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with an 11% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with an 8% share.

In South Africa, imports of spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages increased at an average annual rate of +9.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Namibia (+9.6% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+16.6% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per litre, with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Import price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, import price for spirits, liqueurs and other spirituous beverages increased by +34.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 89% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per litre), while Tanzania ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
