Waffle And Wafer Market Size in SADC

In 2021, after four years of growth, there was decline in the SADC waffle and wafer market, when its value decreased by -1.8% to $X. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2020, and then declined slightly in the following year.

In value terms, waffle and wafer production declined to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +48.1% against 2017 indices. In 2021, overseas shipments of waffles and wafers decreased by -12.1% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after five years of growth. In general, exports recorded a abrupt setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 19%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, waffle and wafer exports fell to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a perceptible decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 26%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 80% of total exports in 2021. Botswana (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 8.1% share, followed by Namibia (5.4%). Madagascar (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to waffle and wafer exports from South Africa stood at -6.7%. At the same time, Tanzania (+47.6%), Botswana (+32.9%) and Madagascar (+6.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +47.6% from 2012-2021. Namibia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Botswana, Namibia, Tanzania and Madagascar increased by +7.7, +2.3, +2.1 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest waffle and wafer supplier in SADC, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Botswana ($X), with a 9.7% share of total exports. It was followed by Madagascar, with a 3.5% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to -3.6%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Botswana (+28.8% per year) and Madagascar (+10.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 7.4% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.1%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 35% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Madagascar (+3.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Waffle And Wafer Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2021, waffle and wafer imports in SADC skyrocketed to X tons, rising by 15% on 2020. Over the period under review, imports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 45%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, waffle and wafer imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 56% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa represented the major importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 37% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Angola (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons), together creating a 48% share of total imports. The following importers - Tanzania (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons) - together made up 7.1% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Democratic Republic of the Congo (with a CAGR of +25.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Mauritius ($X) and Angola ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 72% share of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mozambique, Tanzania and Madagascar lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 21%.

Among the main importing countries, Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a CAGR of +16.4%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, showed a slight curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 7.1%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
