Walnut Market Size in SADC

The SADC walnut market dropped rapidly to $X in 2021, falling by -84.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption faced a dramatic decline. Over the period under review, the market reached the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Walnut Production in SADC

In value terms, walnut production soared to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Overall, production enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 115% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

South Africa (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of walnut production, accounting for 79% of total volume. Moreover, walnut production in South Africa exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Mozambique (X tons), sixfold. The third position in this ranking was held by Tanzania (X tons), with a 4.9% share.

In South Africa, walnut production increased at an average annual rate of +6.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Mozambique (+2.0% per year) and Tanzania (+2.0% per year).

Walnut Exports

Exports in SADC

In 2021, exports of walnuts in SADC surged to X tons, growing by 143% on 2020 figures. Overall, exports saw significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 314% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, walnut exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 263% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa was the key exporter of walnuts in SADC, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was near 87% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Mozambique (X tons), comprising a 13% share of total exports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the walnuts exports, with a CAGR of +30.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mozambique (+21.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of South Africa (+9.5 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Mozambique (-9.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest walnut supplier in SADC, comprising 87% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mozambique ($X), with a 12% share of total exports.

In South Africa, walnut exports increased at an average annual rate of +23.5% over the period from 2012-2021.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, declining by -2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price showed a abrupt contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mozambique stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-5.5%).

Walnut Imports

Imports in SADC

In 2021, supplies from abroad of walnuts increased by 21% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, imports, however, recorded a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 183% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, walnut imports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 276%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, finishing at X tons, which was near 74% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Mauritius (X tons) and Seychelles (X tons), together generating a 19% share of total imports. The following importers - Namibia (X kg), Angola (X kg) and Zambia (X kg) - each reached a 4.8% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to walnut imports into South Africa stood at +5.1%. At the same time, Mauritius (+74.8%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+37.2%) and Namibia (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +74.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Zambia (-5.1%), Seychelles (-7.0%) and Angola (-37.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+46 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+7.9 p.p.) and Mauritius (+5.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Angola (-61 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported walnuts in SADC, comprising 76% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a 7.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 5.7% share.

In South Africa, walnut imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Democratic Republic of the Congo (+34.1% per year) and Mauritius (+74.7% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 15% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Seychelles (+5.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
