The SADC laundry machine market contracted markedly to $X in 2021, shrinking by -25.5% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, consumption remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, laundry machine production dropped slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the three major exporters of washing, bleaching or dyeing machines, namely Mauritius, South Africa and Swaziland, represented more than two-thirds of total export. The following exporters - Botswana (X units), Mozambique (X units) and Namibia (X units) - together made up 6.8% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +11.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest laundry machine supplier in SADC, comprising 72% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Swaziland, with a 2.9% share.

In South Africa, laundry machine exports shrank by an average annual rate of -2.4% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mauritius (-5.9% per year) and Swaziland (-31.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, declining by -45.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 an increase of 82%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per unit in 2020, and then contracted notably in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Mozambique ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+32.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC

In 2021, the amount of washing, bleaching or dyeing machines imported in SADC surged to X units, with an increase of 26% against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, imports recorded a mild increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 79% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, laundry machine imports stood at $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, showed a perceptible decrease. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Botswana (X units) and Tanzania (X units) represented roughly 67% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Malawi (X units), Lesotho (X units) and Comoros (X units), together generating a 20% share of total imports. The following importers - Angola (X units) and South Africa (X units) - together made up 7.5% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Lesotho (with a CAGR of +71.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Tanzania ($X) and Botswana ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 60% of total imports. These countries were followed by Lesotho, Angola, Malawi and Comoros, which together accounted for a further 21%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Lesotho, with a CAGR of +78.3%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, declining by -8.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a abrupt decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 101% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
