For the third consecutive year, the SADC market for welded and cold-formed sections of steel recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 10% to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, consumption saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, welded and cold-formed steel sections production rose significantly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 29% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, overseas shipments of welded and cold-formed sections of steel decreased by -38.3% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, welded and cold-formed steel sections exports dropped remarkably to $X in 2022. Overall, exports faced a drastic downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 59%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) was the largest exporter of welded and cold-formed sections of steel, making up 76% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Malawi (X tons), generating a 22% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to welded and cold-formed steel sections exports from South Africa stood at -10.7%. At the same time, Malawi (+10.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Malawi emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +10.4% from 2012-2022. While the share of Malawi (+19 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-15.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest welded and cold-formed steel sections supplier in SADC, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Malawi ($X), with a 16% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa totaled -11.8%.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Malawi stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Malawi (+4.6%).

Imports of Welded And Cold-Formed Sections Of Steel

Imports in SADC

In 2022, welded and cold-formed steel sections imports in SADC shrank remarkably to X tons, waning by -34.1% compared with the year before. In general, imports recorded a abrupt shrinkage. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, welded and cold-formed steel sections imports dropped sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a abrupt downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when imports increased by 56% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the six major importers of welded and cold-formed sections of steel, namely Botswana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Namibia, Mozambique, Angola and Zimbabwe, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Zambia (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Tanzania (X tons). All these countries together took near 10% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mozambique (with a CAGR of +10.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Angola ($X), Botswana ($X) and Mozambique ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 40% share of total imports. Democratic Republic of the Congo, Zambia, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 41%.

Zambia, with a CAGR of +12.3%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 7.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 an increase of 115% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2022, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zambia ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zambia (+12.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
