Whisky Market Size in SADC
For the third consecutive year, the SADC whisky market recorded growth in sales value, which increased by 9.8% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.
Whisky Production in SADC
In value terms, whisky production expanded remarkably to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -6.8% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 42% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
Whisky Exports
Exports in SADC
In 2022, whisky exports in SADC declined to X litres, dropping by -8% on the year before. In general, exports continue to indicate a deep setback. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 31% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X litres. From 2016 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, whisky exports contracted modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports showed a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 153%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the main exporting country with an export of around X litres, which recorded 44% of total exports. Zambia (X litres) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 29% share, followed by Angola (18%). The following exporters - Mauritius (X litres), Swaziland (X litres), Botswana (X litres) and Seychelles (X litres) - each accounted for an 8.3% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the key exporting countries, was attained by Zambia (with a CAGR of +73.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest whisky supplier in SADC, comprising 65% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 6.7% share.
In South Africa, whisky exports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Angola (+5.0% per year) and Mauritius (+23.6% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per litre in 2022, picking up by 3.6% against the previous year. Export price indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, whisky export price increased by +22.3% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the export price increased by 124% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per litre. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per litre), while Zambia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Angola (+24.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Whisky Imports
Imports in SADC
In 2022, the amount of whisky imported in SADC rose markedly to X litres, with an increase of 11% against 2021 figures. In general, imports, however, saw a perceptible decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X litres in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, whisky imports expanded markedly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 40%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa dominates imports structure, resulting at X litres, which was approx. 66% of total imports in 2022. Tanzania (X litres) took a 6% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Angola (5.2%). The following importers - Democratic Republic of the Congo (X litres), Swaziland (X litres), Mauritius (X litres), Mozambique (X litres), Namibia (X litres) and Botswana (X litres) - together made up 18% of total imports.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of whisky. At the same time, Mozambique (+13.9%), Tanzania (+11.8%), Swaziland (+10.3%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+9.8%), Mauritius (+9.3%) and Botswana (+5.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +13.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Namibia (-4.3%) and Angola (-17.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa, Tanzania, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Swaziland, Mauritius and Mozambique increased by +7.8, +4.4, +2.9, +2.6, +2.1 and +2.1 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported whisky in SADC, comprising 70% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 4.7% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 4.6% share.
In South Africa, whisky imports plunged by an average annual rate of -4.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Mauritius (+4.7% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+5.8% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per litre in 2022, shrinking by -2.8% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 when the import price increased by 9.7% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per litre in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per litre), while Mozambique ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+0.7%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
