The SADC whole fresh milk market totaled $X in 2022, approximately mirroring the previous year. The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were South Africa (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons), together comprising 81% of total production.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Tanzania (with a CAGR of +5.0%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Exports in SADC

Whole fresh milk exports fell to X tons in 2022, reducing by -12.3% on the previous year. Total exports indicated a temperate expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by +0.8% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, whole fresh milk exports dropped to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 35% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 96% of total exports in 2022. Zimbabwe (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to whole fresh milk exports from South Africa stood at +5.8%. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+22.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +22.8% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa and Zimbabwe increased by +9 and +1.9 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest whole fresh milk supplier in SADC, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Zimbabwe ($X), with a 2.4% share of total exports.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, falling by -1.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price continues to indicate a mild contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Zimbabwe totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-1.0%).

Whole Fresh Milk Imports

Imports in SADC

For the third consecutive year, SADC recorded decline in overseas purchases of whole fresh milk, which decreased by -13.9% to X tons in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 29%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, whole fresh milk imports shrank to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -29.6% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when imports increased by 27%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

Botswana (X tons) and Angola (X tons) were the main importers of whole fresh milk in 2022, finishing at approx. 29% and 23% of total imports, respectively. Swaziland (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with an 11% share, followed by Mozambique (11%) and Namibia (8.1%). The following importers - Seychelles (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) - each recorded a 5.9% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by Mozambique (with a CAGR of +20.7%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Angola ($X), Botswana ($X) and Namibia ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 54% share of total imports.

Namibia, with a CAGR of +19.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in SADC stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 3.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, saw a mild decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 12%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Namibia ($X per ton), while Botswana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Seychelles (+0.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
