The SADC winche and capstan market fell modestly to $X in 2021, declining by -3.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption enjoyed prominent growth. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Winche And Capstan Production in SADC
In value terms, winche and capstan production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, posted a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 when the production volume increased by 92% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in SADC
After two years of decline, shipments abroad of winches and capstans increased by 1.6% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, faced a precipitous decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, winche and capstan exports fell to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the largest exporting country with an export of about X units, which recorded 56% of total exports. Angola (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 23% share, followed by Botswana (8.7%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (5.5%). The following exporters - Namibia (X units) and Swaziland (X units) - each amounted to a 3.7% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to winche and capstan exports from South Africa stood at -24.8%. At the same time, Swaziland (+50.9%), Botswana (+46.5%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+44.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +50.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Angola (-5.5%) and Namibia (-8.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Namibia and Swaziland increased by +18, +8.7, +5.5, +1.6 and +1.5 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, the largest winche and capstan supplying countries in SADC were South Africa ($X), Angola ($X) and Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X), with a combined 93% share of total exports. Botswana, Namibia and Swaziland lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 5.4%.
Among the main exporting countries, Swaziland, with a CAGR of +90.6%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, falling by -6.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted a resilient expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 74% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2020, and then contracted in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit), while Swaziland ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Swaziland (+26.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in SADC
Winche and capstan imports soared to X units in 2021, increasing by 46% against 2020 figures. In general, imports, however, showed a mild shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 50% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, winche and capstan imports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, saw a pronounced shrinkage. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
South Africa dominates imports structure, accounting for X units, which was approx. 81% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Angola (X units), generating a 6.3% share of total imports. The following importers - Democratic Republic of the Congo (X units), Tanzania (X units), Botswana (X units) and Zimbabwe (X units) - together made up 11% of total imports.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of imports of winches and capstans. At the same time, Botswana (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +1.6% from 2012-2021. Democratic Republic of the Congo experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Angola (-4.4%), Zimbabwe (-7.2%) and Tanzania (-9.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+12 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Angola and Tanzania saw its share reduced by -2.1% and -3.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported winches and capstans in SADC, comprising 42% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Angola ($X), with an 18% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 15% share.
In South Africa, winche and capstan imports remained relatively stable over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Angola (-6.6% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+6.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per unit, declining by -9.9% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the import price increased by 46% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Zimbabwe (+15.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
