In 2022, the SADC wine of fresh grapes market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In value terms, wine of fresh grapes production fell modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the production volume increased by 12% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, the amount of wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) exported in SADC declined to X litres, falling by -10.4% compared with 2021. In general, exports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 33% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X litres in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wine of fresh grapes exports shrank to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a mild slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X litres) was the key exporter of wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) in SADC, mixing up 100% of total export.
South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine). The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest wine of fresh grapes supplier in SADC.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in SADC amounted to $X per litre, picking up by 2.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, continues to indicate a slight slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 19% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per litre. From 2020 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.

Imports of Wine Of Fresh Grapes (Except Sparkling Wine)
Imports in SADC
In 2022, purchases abroad of wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) increased by 5.3% to X litres, rising for the second year in a row after seven years of decline. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a noticeable descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 70%. The volume of import peaked at X litres in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wine of fresh grapes imports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a mild decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 44% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Angola was the major importing country with an import of about X litres, which amounted to 52% of total imports. Namibia (X litres) took a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Botswana (5.5%) and Tanzania (4.7%). Democratic Republic of the Congo (X litres), Zambia (X litres), Mauritius (X litres), Zimbabwe (X litres), Mozambique (X litres) and Swaziland (X litres) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Imports into Angola decreased at an average annual rate of -6.2% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mauritius (+11.6%), Zimbabwe (+10.8%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+8.0%), Botswana (+7.2%), Swaziland (+6.0%), Zambia (+4.1%), Tanzania (+2.7%) and Mozambique (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mauritius emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +11.6% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Namibia (-3.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Botswana (+3.5 p.p.), Mauritius (+2.5 p.p.), Zimbabwe (+2.4 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+2.4 p.p.), Tanzania (+2.1 p.p.), Zambia (+1.8 p.p.) and Swaziland (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Angola (-20.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Angola ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported wine of fresh grapes (except sparkling wine) in SADC, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Namibia ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 7.3% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Angola totaled -4.4%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Namibia (-1.8% per year) and Mauritius (+5.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in SADC amounted to $X per litre, picking up by 20% against the previous year. Import price indicated perceptible growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 an increase of 49% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per litre in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per litre), while Zambia ($X per litre) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Democratic Republic of the Congo (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
