Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, women’s bathrobe exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, showed a abrupt setback. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
South Africa represented the largest exporter of women’s negligees, bathrobes and dressing gowns of knitted or crocheted textiles in SADC, with the volume of exports recording X units, which was approx. 63% of total exports in 2021. Madagascar (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with an 18% share, followed by Mauritius (9.2%) and Lesotho (7.1%). Swaziland (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +15.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Madagascar (+31.0%), Swaziland (+16.7%) and Lesotho (+11.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +31.0% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mauritius (-20.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Madagascar, Lesotho and Swaziland increased by +45, +16, +4.3 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Mauritius ($X) and Madagascar ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 92% of total exports.
Among the main exporting countries, South Africa, with a CAGR of +3.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced a decline in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per unit in 2021, which is down by -3.6% against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when the export price increased by 32%. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per unit), while Madagascar ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+11.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Women’S Bathrobe Imports
Imports in SADC
Women’s bathrobe imports shrank to X units in 2021, which is down by -10% against the year before. In general, imports saw a perceptible downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 33% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, women’s bathrobe imports dropped slightly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 29% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

South Africa prevails in imports structure, resulting at X units, which was near 91% of total imports in 2021. Mauritius (X units) took a minor share of total imports.
