In 2022, shipments abroad of wood chips and particles increased by 16% to X cubic meters, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. Total exports indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.3% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +65.9% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X cubic meters in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, wood chips and particles exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +3.5% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, reaching X cubic meters, which was approx. 95% of total exports in 2022. Swaziland (X cubic meters) and Mozambique (X cubic meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +3.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Swaziland (+37.8%) and Mozambique (+20.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Swaziland emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in SADC, with a CAGR of +37.8% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Swaziland increased by +3 percentage points. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest wood chips and particles supplier in SADC, comprising 96% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Mozambique ($X), with a 1.2% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa stood at +3.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Mozambique (+10.7% per year) and Swaziland (+30.8% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in SADC stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, with an increase of 2.2% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 15% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per cubic meter), while Swaziland ($X per cubic meter) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-0.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Imports of Wood Chips And Particles
Imports in SADC
Wood chips and particles imports shrank to X cubic meters in 2022, waning by -6.7% on the previous year. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when imports increased by 124%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X cubic meters in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, wood chips and particles imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 168% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X cubic meters) represented the key importer of wood chips and particles, making up 72% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Botswana (X cubic meters), committing a 26% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to wood chips and particles imports into South Africa stood at +17.7%. At the same time, Botswana (+19.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in SADC, with a CAGR of +19.9% from 2012-2022. While the share of South Africa (+22 p.p.) and Botswana (+11 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest wood chips and particles importing markets in SADC were Botswana ($X) and South Africa ($X).
In terms of the main importing countries, Botswana, with a CAGR of +22.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in SADC stood at $X per cubic meter in 2022, picking up by 54% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a deep slump. The level of import peaked at $X per cubic meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per cubic meter), while South Africa amounted to $X per cubic meter.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+2.1%).
